Tijeretas Hill

Named for the frigates of the place, whose tail ends in the form of scissors, it was one of the first places where the English Biologist Charles Robert Darwin landed.

The Tijeretas Hill, located on San Cristobal Island in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is a place where you can especially observe frigates and the beautiful Wreck Bay, as well as Puerto Baquerizo Moreno in all its splendor.

Ideal place to take a bath, snorkel and enjoy the immense marine fauna that we have on the island.

It is also a place for diving.     

A fantastic place to observe the view of white sand beaches on one side and the roofs of Puerto Baquerizo, on the other. 

A self-guided path built with cut stone, which crosses a forest that leads to observation points of the fascinating coastal landscape and native flora and fauna. This trail culminates in a cove of calm waters, where you can practice water sports and observe nature.

It is also interested because of historical reasons, since it was the first place where the Naturalist Scientist Charles Darwin landed throughout the Galapagos.

Located 2 Kilometers away from the Interpretation Center, to the southwest of the San Cristobal Island.

Tijeretas Hill Flora

The flora of Cerro Tijeretas is considered an extraordinary example of biological evolution. Among the native plants that can be observed are cacti, red mangroves with their typical aerial roots. The flora is very diverse in this area.

Tijeretas Hill Fauna

We can observe a great variety of marine fauna such as sea lions, turtles, terejové, dolphins and lizards.

In this colony some pairs of frigates nest.

Frigates (Fregata minor) are known as earwigs by the way in which these seabirds open and close the large pallets of their tails in a similar way to a scissor. The name of the Tijeretas Hill was given by the abundance of these birds in the area.

  • Marine fauna: Barber butterfly, blue beard parrot, striped, old chameleon, gringo, goat, trabollito, giant damsel, white-tailed damsel, old golden spot, flagfish, sucks stone, swarm, sergeant major, red light goby, scythe butterfly, old edged and double dotted soap dish.  
  • Crustaceans: Sea cucumber, green hedgehog and Christmas trees. 

Cerro Tijeretas Attractive

  • Top of the Tijeretas hill about 200 meters above sea level, you can see a panoramic view that Darwin and the expedition group used as a geographical location for their trips. From this area you can see the islet of the Sleeping Lion, Isla Lobos, Cerro Brujo, Puerto Baquerizo, Shipwreck Bay, Punta Carola Beach and Santa Fé Island.  
  • Lookouts: One of them dates from the Second World War and was taken out by the Ecuadorian navy in the early 1970s for military practices. On the other viewpoint there is a statue of Charles Darwin in honor of his passage through San Cristobal.
